Relevance: MHETase has been shown to be involved in the second depolymerization step of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). MHETase breaks down the degradation product produced by PETase, by hydrolysis of mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET) into terephthalate and ethylene glycol. MHETase, and its corresponding pathway partner, PETase are of biotechnological interest in the recycling of plastic products into benign materials.2-3
