Relevance: The SARS-CoV viral nucleocapsid protein serves multiple critical functions during the viral life cycle. This 46 kDa protein, composed of 422 amino acids2 It binds and packages the positive strand viral genome RNA into a helical ribonucleocapsid (RNP) structure and has a core role in virion assembly through its interactions with the membrane protein (M) and the viral genome. The protein is composed of an N-terminal RNA binding domain and a C-terminal multimerization domain3.
